Hoe klinken underwater, jelly en stuck? Hoe bewegen ze? Welke smaak, welke geur? Hoe vertaal ik ze naar performance?

Deze onderzoeksvraag leidde tot de creatie van Licking the Fingers of Your Fire Floor – een project dat bestaat uit een locatie specifieke performance en een poëziebundel, die op 19 juni worden gepresenteerd in de kerkzaal van de Thomaskerk. 

De performance combineert geluid, beweging en visueel theater. Een voorstelling met originele muzikale composities en choreografie. Het manifesteert een meer fluïde wereld waarin lichamen vrij kunnen bestaan, los van sociale verwachtingen en vooroordelen – gewoon als lichamen die naast elkaar bestaan. De voorstelling is geïnspireerd door eerder werk van Carmela Michailidis, hun gedichten, Olivia Laing’s boek “Every Body” en het boek “Bodies of Water” van Astrida Neimanis. 

De performance bestaat uit drie scènes: de Jelly, de Stuck en de Underwater scène. Deze drie woorden groeiden uit tot abstracte filosofische ideeën die elk een eigen perspectief en vertaling bieden op hoe we de wereld zouden kunnen ervaren. Deze woorden worden ook wel conceptuele texturen genoemd en begeleidden Carmela tijdens het maakproces van dit werk. 

De scènes zijn voortgekomen uit gedichten die Carmela de afgelopen drie jaar heeft geschreven, gedichten die terug te vinden zijn in de poëziebundel. Deze gedichten zijn vertaald naar muziek en beweging in deze performance, en vormen zo een verlengstuk en inkijk in Carmela’s artistieke proces.

Over de maker: 

Carmela Michailidis is muzikant, improvisator, danser, componist en performance maker. Hun werk bestaat uit tableaux vivant-achtige scènes, waarin geluid en beweging samen abstracte werelden creëren. Werelden die maatschappelijke structuren en stereotypen verdraaien en ongemakkelijke esthetische omgevingen tot leven brengen. 

“Zelf identificeer ik mij als queer, feminist en kunstenaar. Ik voel vaak woede over onrechtvaardigheden en probeer de menselijke wereld beter te begrijpen. Mijn performances zijn abstract, maar dragen mijn persoonlijke en collectieve worstelingen binnen de huidige maatschappij. Daarom zijn ze donker, maar ook hoopvol, krachtig, intens, ongemakkelijk, mooi, rauw – en ik probeer dat alles alleen maar verder te verdiepen.”

How does underwater, jelly and stuck sound, how do they move? What taste, what smell? How do I translate them in performance? 

This research question led to the creation of Licking the Fingers of Your Fire Floor – a project consisting of a site specific performance and a poetry collection that will be shown the 19th of June in the church hall of de Thomaskerk. 

The performance combines sound, movement and visual theatre. A performance with original musical compositions and choreography. Manifesting a more fluid world where bodies can live freely, away from social expectations and prejudice, just as bodies coexisting. 

Inspired by previous works of Carmela Michailidis, their poems, Olivia Laings book “Every Body” and Astrida Neimanis book “Bodies of water”. 

The performance is made out of three scenes. The Jelly, the Stuck and the Underwater. These three words became abstract philosophical ideas that carry their perspectives and translation of a way we could possibly experience the world. These words are also called conceptual textures and they guided Carmela through the process of making this work. 

The scenes arose from poems that they have been writing the past three years, poems you can find in the poetry collection. These poems are translated into music and movement in this performance, therefore they are an extension and insight of Carmela’s artistic process.

About the artist:

Carmela Michailidis is a musician, improvisor, mover, composer and performance maker. Their work exists of tableaux vivant like sceneries, where sound and movement co-create abstract worlds. Twisting societal structures and stereotypes, creating uncomfortable aesthetic environments.

“Myself, I identify as queer, feminist and artist. I find myself being angry about a lot of injustices and trying to understand the human world better. My performances are abstract but still carry my personal and collective struggles in the current society. Therefore they are dark but also hopeful, powerful, intense, disgusting, beautiful, raw and I am trying to make them all of that even more.”
