vrouwen in Afghanistan, Irak en Nederland.

PAX en De Thomas nodigen je van harte uit om samen Internationale Vrouwendag te vieren.
Dat doen we op 8 maart met een paneldiscussie met drie activisten uit Afghanistan, Irak en
Nederland. Zij strijden, ieder op hun eigen manier en in hun eigen context, voor grotere
representatie en participatie van vrouwen in de politiek.

De paneldiscussie richt zich op de tactieken en strategieën die vrouwenrechtenactivisten in
deze landen hanteren om tot verandering te komen en de politieke participatie van vrouwen
te versterken. Welke obstakels kom je daarbij tegen? Hoe vind je een weg in een
samenleving die steeds meer vijandig staat tegenover gelijkwaardige politieke participatie?
Hoe bouw je allianties en samenwerkingen op? En zijn er gedeelde lessen, overeenkomsten
en verschillen tussen Irak en Afghanistan, als ook met Nederland?

De sprekers

Fatema Jafari is een Afghaanse vrouwenrechtenactivist, voormalig lid van het provinciale bestuur van Herat en auteur van het boek ‘Women’s Political Participation in Afghanistan’. Na de machtovername van de Taliban in 2021 moest ze haar land ontvluchten. Op dit moment werkt ze voor de Gender Uni van PAX.t. Onder de Taliban leven Afghaanse vrouwen en meisjes onder gender apartheid en vanuit Nederland blijft Jafari vrouwenrechtenactivisten in Afghanistan ondersteunen.

Een toonaangevende vrouwenrechtenactivist en universitair onderzoeker uit Irak is naar Nederland gekomen om het panel bij te wonen. Ze deelt inzichten en bevindingen uit haar uitgebreide onderzoek naar de rol van vrouwelijke leiders in recente protestbewegingen in Irak. Op dit moment worden in Irak systematisch de vooruitgang op het gebied van vrouwenrechten teruggedraaid.

Devika Partiman is een Nederlandse activist en oprichter van de beweging ‘Stem op een Vrouw’. Deze organisatie heeft als doel de politieke participatie van vrouwen de vergroten en versterken. In 2019 ontving ze de Ribbius Peleter Award en in 2022 de PAX Vredesduif voor haar werk.

Ilse Wermink is Gender Adviseur bij PAX, de grootste vredesorganisatie in Nederland. PAX werkt aan de bescherming van burgers tegen oorlogsdaden, het beëindigen van gewapend geweld en het bouwen van inclusieve vrede in 15 landen. Dat doen zij samen met lokale partners en mensen die, net als PAX, geloven in een waardig bestaan in een vredige samenleving.

De paneldiscussie wordt gemodereerd door Chantal Suissa-Rune: moderator, adviseur en
spreker, met een passie voor conflicttransformatie en culturele en religieuze diversiteit.

International Women’s day at the Thomas: female political representation and participation in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Netherlands

PAX  and De Thomas invite you to celebrate International Women’s day with us on Friday the 8th of March (20:00-21:30) with a special panel discussion with three activists from Afghanistan, Iraq and the Netherlands that, each in their own way and in their own context, are fighting for increased women’s political representation and participation in crucial political processes.

On women’s political participation, the panel discussion will focus on activist tactics and strategies to influence change and overcome obstacles. How to position in a societal context that’s increasingly hostile towards equal political participation and representation of women? How to build alliances and partnerships? What are shared learnings, similarities and differences between Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as with the Netherlands?

Our guests

Fatema Jafari is an Afghan women’s rights activist, former member of the Herat provincial council and author of the book “Women’s Political Participation in Afghanistan”. She had to flee Afghanistan after the takeover by the Taliban in 2021 and is currently working at the PAX gender unit, while continuing to support women’s rights defenders in Afghanistan. Under Taliban rule Afghan women and girls live under gender apartheid.

From Iraq, a leading women right’s activist and academic researcher has travelled to the Netherlands to join the panel. She will share her activist insights and findings of her extensive research on the role of women’s leadership in recent protest movements in Iraq, as well as connections between dominant masculinities and militarization. Iraq is currently facing a coordinated and systematic backlash on women’s rights and gender equality.

Devika Partiman is a Dutch social activist and founder of the movement ‘’Stem op een Vrouw’’ (vote for a woman) that aims to increase and strengthen female political representation and participation. In 2019 she was awarded the Ribbius Peletier Penning Award for her work and in 2022 the PAX Peace Dove.

Ilse Wermink works as a Gender Advisor at PAX, the largest peace organization in the Netherlands. PAX works actively to protect civilians against acts of war, end armed violence and build inclusive peace in 15 countries (incl. the Netherlands), together with local partners and people who, just like us, believe that everyone has a right to a dignified life in a peaceful society

The panel discussion is moderated by Chantal Suissa-Rune, who works as a moderator, advisor and public speaker with a passion for conflict transformation and cultural and religious diversity.
